What is Food Security?
Food For Folks has dedicated its activities to focus on the concept of food security.
Food Security is a concept used to describe the social, economic, political and cultural relationships people have with food; and how these relationships relate to equality, justice, choices and poverty. Food security is a very broad concept. The working definition that we use to understand this concept is called the 5 A's of food security developed by the Ryerson University. It seems to follow the same pattern as Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the first A being of basic survival and the last A being the actualization of policies that allow food sovereignty. |

What is Urban Agriculture?
Urban Agriculture means cultivating the urban jungle we live in to grow plants for domestic, commercial and community uses like: producing food, herbs, flowers, medicines and companion plants for various needs.
Urban Agriculture presents educational opportunities for city folks to gain valuable knowledge, life experiences, and competencies for sustainable living and development in the environmental, social, economic and political realms of daily living.
It is our vision to work on a not-for-profit basis to invest in sustainable urban agriculture developments in the inner city, to foster social enterprise by hiring people with barriers to employment, to localize the supply chain of fresh produce by selling food grown in the heart of the city business-to-business to local markets, restaurants and food services; and produce healthy quality local food.
Food For Folks operates under a business plan that focuses our project services on urban farm production businesses. This is all about developing our community from the ground up. We are committed to permaculture and indigenous gardening practices in to cultivate the cityscape to live within our means. We focus on finding the best uses of spaces and landscapes, the best growing methods, and the smart use of materials and equipment. Our goal is financial sustainability, community vitality, safe neigbourhoods, and promoting environmentally conscious business practices.
